Salary Information

CG-23 - $22.50 to $24.74 per hour

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for ensuring the safety and security of College of the North Atlantic’s Bay St. George Campus buildings and residence complex playing a critical role in maintaining a secure learning and living environment for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Campus safety and patrols: conduct routine and unscheduled patrols of campus buildings, student residences, parking lots, and other College property to prevent unauthorized access, theft, vandalism, and other security threats.  Identify and report any safety hazards or maintenance concerns.
  • Policy enforcement: enforce College policies and procedures, including health and safety regulations, compliance with smoking boundaries, verifying student and staff IDs, and monitoring restricted areas. 
  • Traffic and parking management: monitor campus parking areas to ensure compliance with College traffic policies.  Issue citations for parking violations and assist in traffic control during peak hours or special events.
  • Incident reporting and documentation: maintain accurate security logs and prepare detailed reports on security breaches, safety concerns, and incidents. 
  • Emergency response: act as a first responder to after-hours emergency calls, fire alarms, and building alarms.  Assess situations, take necessary actions, and coordinate with emergency services (fire, police, medical personnel) as required.
  • Staff and contractor oversight: verify the presence and activities of after-hours staff and contractors, ensuring they follow safety protocols and have proper authorization to access designated areas.
  • Vehicle operation: operate College vehicles as needed to perform security patrols, respond to incidents, or transport supplies between campus locations.
  • General maintenance and safety support: conduct minor maintenance and repair tasks to maintain a safe and functional environment. 
  • Customer service: provide assistance and guidance to students, staff, and visitors, including offering directions.

Screening Criteria

  • Formal training or coursework in security, law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field (equivalencies will be considered).
  • Experience providing security services to the general public.

Assessment Criteria

  • Knowledge of security principles, procedures, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of emergency response and crisis management, including fire safety procedures and crisis intervention (ie. aggressive behaviour).
  • Ability to mediate conflict.
  • Ability to coordinate and cooperate with fellow security personnel to ensure campus safety.
  • Ability to work efficiently with limited direct supervision.
  • Professional and respectful demeanor in all interactions.
  • Communication skills.

Conditions of Offer

  • When requested by the Employer, a recent and satisfactory Certificate of Conduct must be provided.
  • Verification of credentials and applicable licenses, certifications, and/or professional memberships as required for the position.

Conditions of Acceptance

  • Physically demanding position: involves extended periods of standing, walking, and patrolling both indoors and outdoors, often in varying weather conditions. The role requires physical stamina to complete security rounds and enforce campus regulations effectively.
  • Shift Work: requires 12-hour shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as part of a rotating schedule.

  • This is a casual position. Scheduling and hours of work may vary, with no guaranteed weekly hours.
