CNA presents awards and scholarships

College of the North Atlantic (CNA) campuses across the province recently awarded 259 awards and scholarships totaling $234,370.

Each year, CNA’s Awards Program provides a significant contribution to the education of students through the encouragement and recognition of high scholastic performance, leadership and community involvement by providing a measure of assistance to those who may experience financial difficulty in completing their program of studies.

“We had 258 students win provincial awards,” said Sandra Lewis, chairperson of the Provincial Awards Committee. “One student won two provincial awards due to an external donor selection and membership association. We try to “spread the wealth” to as many students as possible.”

Most of the funds in the provincial awards program come from outside donors such as financial institutions, large corporations, local businesses and individuals in the community. There are also awards sponsored by families, individuals, and the Faculty and Staff Appeal which is driven by donations from college employees.

CNA has been presenting scholarships and awards for more than 40 years and Lewis says the funds are crucial to some students completing their chosen program of study.

“Awards are very important for several reasons: financially – funds for school, living expenses and to reduce debt,” she said. “It increases confidence and self-esteem, the students gain recognition, and it can enhance a resume for potential employment.”
