CNA presents awards and scholarships

Stephenville, NL - College of the North Atlantic (CNA) campuses across the province recently awarded 315 awards and scholarships totaling $284,487.

Each year, CNA’s Awards Program provides a significant contribution to the education of students through the encouragement and recognition of high scholastic performance, and by providing a measure of assistance to those who may experience financial difficulty in completing their program of studies.

“We had 308 students who won provincial awards,” says Sandra Lewis, chair of the awards program. “Eight students from across the province won two awards due to external donor selections and membership association. We try, as much as possible, to ‘spread the wealth’ to as many students as possible.”

A record breaking 3,655 students submitted award applications this year, a significant increase from last year.

CNA has been presenting scholarships and awards for 40 years and Lewis says the funds are crucial to some students completing their chosen program of study.

“They are very important for several reasons: financially – to help with the cost of school and living expenses, and hopefully bring their student debt down,” she says. “For some students award money will mean they can stay in school to complete their program.”

She says it can also spark interest from potential employers when they see an award or awards listed on the applicant’s resume or portfolio.

“It gives students increased confidence and self-esteem when they receive an award and are recognized.”

Most of the funds in the provincial awards program come from outside donors such as banks, large corporations, local businesses and individuals in the community. There are also awards that come from families, individuals, and the faculty and staff appeal that is driven by donations from college employees.
