An honourable mention went to Shawna Murphy of Distance Learning for her photo titled: Seaweed Harvesting-Jambiani Zanzibar.

First place winner is Paulina Zaldivar of Prince Philip Drive campus, who submitted a picturesque image of St. John’s.

In celebration of the 2012 International Education Week (Nov. 12-16), College of the North Atlantic's (CNA) International Services Office organized the fourth annual Through Global Lens photo contest.

Faculty, staff and students at all CNA campuses in Newfoundland and Labrador were encouraged to submit photos from their international or local travels. There were 97 contestants and 170 submissions. Each contestant could submit up to two photos taken from local or international travels which reflected a local or foreign culture and scenery.

Over 300 people registered for the voting, choosing Paulina Zaldivar (Prince Philip Drive campus) who submitted a picturesque image of St. John’s, as the first place winner. An honourable mention went to Shawna Murphy (Distance Learning) for her photo titled: Seaweed Harvesting-Jambiani Zanzibar.

The contest was designed to raise awareness of international education and exchange, and to raise cultural awareness and understanding at CNA.

According to Natasha Quinlan, International Business Development Assistant, the department started the contest to expand the participation level in International Education Week.

“What better way to do it than through a photo contest? This event allows us to showcase different cultures and display them through our website and pictures posted around campus,” says Smith. “With this event it can reach a broad range of people, including students and staff, and allow them to see our world through someone else’s lens, which can trigger our appreciation for our differences and the beauty that surrounds us!”

Sonia Ho, International Student Coordinator at CNA, says the contest is a very popular event during International Education Week.

“Although the contest has always been opened to all staff and students at the college, the voting process was only limited to staff and students at our St. John’s campuses previously,” says Ho. “This year we have developed a much more sophisticated online voting system. Next year, we are hoping to extend this contest to include our campuses overseas as well.”
Ho says through events such as the Through Global Lens contest, CNA recognizes and showcases the artistic talents within the college community.

“More importantly, it is a wonderful opportunity for the college staff and students to converse and share their knowledge and experiences about cultures and countries around the world,” she says. “As advocates of international education, we hope to raise intercultural understanding and awareness within the college and to create a welcoming environment for our increasingly global community.”
