October 25, 2001 – Graduates of College of the North Atlantic’s Occupational Therapists Assistant program are the first in Atlantic Canada to receive credit toward the completion of the Bachelor of Sciences (Occupational Therapy) degree at Dalhousie University.
College OTA graduates who have obtained an overall average of 80 percent or greater are eligible to request this transfer of credit. Successful applicants will receive three full 1000 level credits of the five required as a pre-requisite for admission to the degree program.
Dr. Elizabeth Townsend, Director of Dalhousie’s School of Occupational Therapy, in her letter to Dr. Donna Henderson, Chair of the college’s School of Health Sciences, said the university is proud to offer this option to College of the North Atlantic graduates.
“This recognition from Dalhousie University reflects on the quality of our Occupational Therapists Assistant program, its students and its faculty,” says Dr. Henderson.
The agreement between the two institutions became effective September 1 of this year and runs until 2006.
The Occupational Therapists Assistants program is offered through the college’s Distributed Learning Service. The program consists of 13 courses available on the Internet plus a nine-week field placement. Case studies, problem-based team assignments, hands-on labs and three fieldwork opportunities ensure the student practices the skills learned from the on-line material.
The program was also recently recognized by the WebCT Corporation at its annual meeting in June, 2001. Lucy Miller, an instructor with the college, received the WebCT Award of Excellence for the course Normal Functional Movement.
