Students from College of the North Atlantic (CNA) and Memorial University laid claim to almost every challenge in which they competed at the Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship (ACE) Canada Regional exposition in Halifax, last week.

Students from CNA took top spots in the 2012 Capital One SIFE Financial Education Challenge category with both the Clarenville (League A) and Prince Philip Drive (League B) campuses placing first in their respective Leagues. CNA’s Grand Falls-Windsor campus placed second behind PPD in League B.

SIFE Memorial teams won in both the Scotiabank Go Green Challenge and the TD Canada Trust Entrepreneurship Challenge, while two Memorial students won in the individual category of Student Entrepreneur Competition. All will compete at the ACE 2012 National Exposition in Calgary in May. CNA’s Clarenville team and Grand Falls-Windsor team placed second and third respectively in the TD Canada Trust Entrepreneurship Challenge.

In the individual categories, SIFE Memorial Vice President, Project Management, Rebecca Aylward, was named a 2012 HSBC Woman Leader of Tomorrow and has been invited to attend the “Top to Future Top Women’s Forum” held at the 2012 ACE National Exposition, while Michelle Barbour was named one of two 2012 ACE Student Entrepreneurs for Atlantic Canada, in recognition of her success as developer and proprietor of Tutoring for Young Minds, a French immersion tutoring business. Michelle will also go on to present her business on the national stage in Calgary in May.

“I am extremely proud of how our SIFE teams represented themselves and the college at this year’s competition,” said Mary Vaughan, Dean of Business and Information Technology at CNA. “The students’ ability to connect with the judges speaks volumes to their knowledge of business best practices, the relevance of their projects and the quality of training and coaching they have received from their advisors and the faculty members at our campuses.”

SIFE Memorial is the defending national champion of the ACE competition. The largest student run organization in the world, SIFE’s mandate is to create local solutions to global economic challenges.

“Each team's presentations and projects were inspiring and exemplified the impressive impact SIFE projects are having on the well-being of people in our communities,” said Dr. Wilfred Zerbe, Dean, Faculty of Business Administration, who was on hand as the students were again named regional champions. “Every day, our SIFE students are winners for the amazing work they do in our community and beyond, but it is still great to see their hard work and commitment recognized."
