A graduate of CNA’s visual arts program, Meagan Musseau has been selected as one of 39 artists from across the country to take part in the National Arts Program at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax this month.

Corner Brook – A College of the North Atlantic (CNA) graduate has been chosen to participate in the National Artist Program at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax, which run February 11-27.

Meagan Musseau is one of 39 emerging artists from across the country to be chosen for the program. During the Games, the group will spend two weeks in residence under the mentorship of leading Canadian artists, conduct art workshops for youth and collaborate on a gala performance for the Games’ closing ceremonies.

For Musseau, the experience will be the fulfilment of a dream that she thought was lost.

Before enrolling in CNA’s visual arts program, Musseau was a talented athlete, competing at the high school and regional levels in volleyball and gaining an invitation to try out for the provincial youth soccer team.

“I could have gone to the Canada Games a few times but it never really worked out,” she says. “Then in college I dislocated my knee, and I knew I would never be able to compete.”

Instead, she turned to her other passion – art.

“I was always in art class in school, and was always drawing and making things for as long as I can remember,” she says. “The reason I chose the visual arts program at CNA in Stephenville was to develop a portfolio.”

It was selections from that portfolio that landed Musseau her spot at the Canada Games.

“Having done that two year program is the basis for why I got chosen to go to the Canada Games. I already had a big portfolio and I put in some of my oil paintings, some prints and a soapstone piece.”

Musseau says she still doesn’t have all the details about what she’ll be doing in Halifax, but she’s really looking forward to the experience.

“I think it’s going to open a lot of doors and give me a lot of experience working collaboratively,” she says. “It will open a lot of doors for me creatively to get some influence from 38 other artists.”
