Palestinian students perform at the 2010 Global Village hosted by College of the North Atlantic-Qatar.

College of the North Atlantic-Qatar’s 4th Annual Global Village opened on Sunday night to record crowds as over 1,500 people from CNA-Q and across Doha and Qatar visited the event.

“It’s truly amazing to see so many people here enjoying the entertainment, visiting our student booths and having a great time,” said event co-organizer Diane Martin. “The atmosphere tonight has been beyond anything I ever could have imagined. I think this is our best year yet.”

The two-day event showcases the cultures represented by students at CNA-Q. This year there are 15 student countries represented along with Canada and Qatar. Each group decorates their booth to represent their home country – with paintings, rugs, artwork and traditional food, the students have spent weeks preparing their displays, and their commitment is evident.

During the opening night festivities, the award for Best Booth was presented to Somalia with Pakistan and Lebanon taking second and third place respectively.

At the Canadian booth, guests could take their shot at hockey, purchase homemade baked goods and get a taste of Canada’s Tim Horton’s coffee all while watching replays of the gold medal winning games of Canada’s men’s and women’s Olympic hockey teams. The café booth raised over 2050QR (CA$577) for charity.

The Qatari village was crowded with visitors listening to traditional stories and music, getting henna hand art and watching traditional handicrafts including weaving and woodworking.

Global Village 2010 will see 13 student groups perform in addition to the Qatari performance, which wowed audiences during the opening night.
