Corner Brook campus holds pinning ceremony

The Corner Brook campus, College of the North Atlantic (CNA), celebrated its Practical Nursing pinning ceremony on Friday, January 16, 2009 at the Greenwood Inn and Suites. Twenty-four students representing 19 communities were awarded diplomas and pins.

The President’s Medal for Outstanding Achievement was presented to Melissa Burke of Corner Brook by Brent Howell, CNA campus administrator. Burke was also presented the College of Licensed Practical Nurses Highest Academic Standing Award.

The Highest Clinical Proficiency Award is awarded by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses to the graduating student who has excelled in all seven clinical areas; the recipient of this award was Judy White of Corner Brook.

A progress award and others were presented for overall clinical proficiency and clinical excellence in each of the seven areas in which the graduates obtained experience.

Other awards and recipients include: Clinical Excellence in Mental Health Nursing, Jennifer Simmonds; Clinical Excellence in Surgical Nursing, Janet McFatridge; Clinical Excellence in Community Health Nursing, Arlene Parrill, Garrett Roberts and Heather Smith; Clinical Excellence in Pediatric Nursing, Elizabeth Hann; Clinical Excellence in Obstetrical Nursing, Laurie McLean; Clinical Excellence in Medical Nursing, Joyce Flynn; and Clinical Excellence in Long Term Care Nursing, Terry Lynn Riberdy. The Progress Award, for professional growth and determination in class and/or clinical during the program, was awarded to Kyran Pittman.

The Recognition Award, for outstanding attendance in clinical practice, went to Maxine Earle, Tracey Gardner, Elizabeth Hann, Courtney Lawless, Arlene Parrill, Terri Lynn Riberdy and Jennifer Simmonds.

The Honorable Gerry Byrne, MP, brought greetings. Terry Loder, MHA for the Bay of Islands, brought greetings from Premier Danny Williams and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Brent Howell spoke on behalf of CNA President Jean Madill and the Board of Governors and imparted a convocation message to the graduates on behalf of the Corner Brook campus.

Greetings were also brought from various partners: Paul Fisher, executive director and registrar of the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador; Rob Kenny, vice-president, Human Resources, Western Regional Integrated Health Authority; Suzanne Marks read greetings from Joan Rowsell, director of the Centre for Nursing Studies; and Donna Luther, City Councillor, brought greetings on behalf of the City of Corner Brook. MimaJoan Saunders (LPN instructor, Personal Care Attendant program, CNA) was the guest speaker for the graduation. Practical Nursing graduate Judy White provided the valedictory on behalf of the 2007-2008 graduating class.
