100 per cent pass rate again!

December 7, 2000 - For the second time this year, medical students from College of the North Atlantic have achieved a 100 per cent pass rate on a national certification exam.
This time it was the 12 Medical Radiography students who aced the competency-based exam set by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists.
“Passing this exam allows the graduate to use the designation RT(R) – Registered Technologist (Radiography),” says Irene O’Brien, the program’s instructor.
“In most parts of Canada and the elsewhere in the world, this designation is required for employment.”
And employment hasn’t been a problem for graduates of the Medical Radiography program. Eight of the 12 students are currently working in their field with the remaining four gone back to the college to further their education and training.
“Four of those eight who are working are located here in the province while the other four have taken jobs in other provinces,” says O’Brien.
According to the Medical Radiography instructor, students of this and other medical courses from the college are being recruited “like never before” from agencies outside the province.
“They are being made offers they can’t refuse – signing bonuses, relocation allowances, subsidized housing, permanent, full-time jobs with full benefits packages,” says O’Brien.
“It’s now commonplace for students to ask for – and receive – moving allowances, additional living allowances for the first three months, and guaranteed hours of work per pay period. While it’s sad to see half the class head out (of province) every year, it’s exciting to see them successfully launch careers in their chosen profession in environments that demonstrate, in a tangible way, an appreciation of their knowledge, skills and attitudes.”
The graduating students include Sheldon Boyd of Summerford, Martina Corbin of Grand Falls-Windsor, Jennifer Hibbs of Bell Island, Connie Hynes of New Ferolle Harbour, Carol Inkpen of Burin, Melanie Keough of Corner Brook, Stacy Labour of Marystown, Sybrina McLean of Port aux Choix, Alice Sheppard of York Harbour, Amanda Snelgrove of Conception Bay South, Vanessa Thistle of Carbonear and Wanda Tobin of Joe Batt’s Arm.
