The recently announced telecommunications link by private industry will increase online benefits for College of the North Atlantic.
“This new link, to be completed by December 2007, will undoubtedly provide increased potential for research projects from our Office of Applied Research,” said Wayne Hann, Manager of Information Technology at the college’s Ridge Road campus in St. John’s.
The link will enable the college to access higher bandwidth at its campuses where it is necessary in order to qualify for research funding.
“It will also benefit the students enrolled through our Distributed Learning Service. The potential increase in bandwidth in many communities via Trans Gulf will provide distance learning students with higher speed internet access thereby improving the quality of a web-based education at CNA.”
The CANet IV network, implemented by Industry Canada, is the latest research network in the country which many post-secondary institutions utilize. Access to this network could be expanded in the province and CNA could then be able to take greater advantage of this capability.
“This will certainly offer us more potential in increasing our access to other educational institutions, and especially to rural areas in Newfoundland and Labrador which will realize an extensive increase in bandwidth,” stated Hann.
Currently the college utilizes a number of applications that utilize the network including; PeopleSoft, Distributed Learning, campus internet access, video-conferencing and others. Once Trans Gulf is operational, staff, faculty and students from all campuses will be able to gain improved access to college network-based educational services.
“Initiatives such as Trans Gulf will further expand services at better prices to college students in the province.”
