To create more opportunities for women in the skilled trades sector, College of the North Atlantic (CNA) is announcing the implementation of a Career Exploration for Women (CEW) program.
The eight week program is a one-time offering and will introduce women to a number of career options in skilled trades. Industry has been vocal in expressing their need to address the skilled trade worker shortage. By the year 2020 an expected shortage of one million workers will be evident.
“This program will assist women to develop the skills they need to make a career choice that best reflects their abilities and interests in relation to skilled trades,” said Bruce Hollett, President of CNA.
“They will be given the opportunity to research training programs, funding options and how industry responds to women in skilled trades.”
The program offering comes as part of CNA’s commitment to women in trades. By introducing participants to job interviewing skills, leadership skills and the ability to develop a resume or skills portfolio, they will gain valuable experience in deciding which direction to take in their career development.
“Participants will study the entire process of career exploration,” stated Hollett.
“Working with computer software, participating in field trips and discussing labour market information, including trends and opportunities, will assist them in gaining a better understanding of life long learning and work values that are required for all careers.”
CNA will be supplying all participants with the necessary equipment for this program and will be implementing a minimal fee for registration.
Participants do not require high school completion however they must have left high school by June of 2006. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate recognizing their participation in CEW.
This program offering will commence in January 2007 with further details to be released.
