In celebration of Mental Health Week, May 1 to 7, 2006, the Canadian Mental Health Association, in partnership with the College of the North Atlantic, announce the official launch of the mental illness education and communication program entitled, Changing Minds.
Changing Minds is an 8-module, DVD-based, mental illness education program that focuses on consumers and family members telling their personal stories and experience of mental illness. Through an experiential approach it will teach audiences not only about mental illness and the signs and symptoms but also how to communicate more effectively with a person who is experiencing illness.
Changing Minds will address the educational needs of front line service providers as recommended by Judge Donald S. Luther in his report into the deaths of Mr. Norman Reid and Mr. Darryl Power.
College of the North Atlantic is delighted to be partnering with the CMHA and is proud to play a key role in the delivery of this important program. As the training partner, the college will use its expertise to support the delivery of a “train the trainer program” to health care related professionals as well as provide the college’s network of campuses to deliver the Changing Minds program at locations throughout the province.
The Canadian Mental Health Association received funding from the federal Department of Safety and Emergency Preparedness, the provincial Department of Health and Community Services, Glaxosmithkline and Rotary St. John’s Northwest to complete this comprehensive program.
The Changing Minds education program will be overseen by an advisory committee made up of staff and volunteers of the Canadian Mental Health Association and staff of the College of the North Atlantic.
