July 2, 2003 – The recipient of the Governor General's Medal for 2001-2002 for District Three is Lewisporte native Wanda Lee Tippett, a graduate of the two-year Office Administration (Executive) Diploma program at College of the North Atlantic’s Grand Falls-Windsor campus.

The award was presented by the Honorable Anna Thistle, Minister of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education and MHA for Grand Falls-Buchans District, at the Grand Falls-Windsor campus Graduation and Recognition Ceremony June 20, 2003.

In 1873, the Earl of Dufferin, who served as Governor General of Canada from 1872-1878, decided to have a medal created to reward scholastic merit. At the post secondary level, the College Bronze Medal of the Governor General of Canada is awarded annually to the student who graduates with the highest academic standing in his or her district.

Tippett, who has been recognized as the ideal candidate for this award, has also been on the Honour Society throughout her course of study at the college for maintaining a 4.0 GPA with a weighted average of 94.94 percent and received the President’s Medal at this year’s graduation ceremony for the highest average in her graduating class.

In her first year Tippett received the Academic Merit Award, and during this past year was awarded the Centenary of Responsible Government Post-Secondary Scholarship for academic excellence from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

She is currently employed on contract in Gander with Aliant.
