February 19, 2003 - Sylvia Alexander and Jamie MacDonald were recently appointed to College of the North Atlantic’s Board of Governors.
Alexander, Coordinator of Business programs at Bay St. George campus, has been with the college for some 30 years, and this appointment as faculty representative marks her first time on the board. Alexander says she is pleased to have been asked to represent her fellow employees, and she hopes to use her vast knowledge of the college along with experiences from other volunteer organizations to assist the college board.
“I bring to the board a long work history with the college – both with programs and infrastructure issues.”
Alexander sits on other numerous boards – locally, provincially, and nationally and holds executive positions and is Chair of Marketing for each. Some of these include the local faction of the Community Business Development Corporation along with its Provincial and Atlantic counterparts, and the Stephenville International Airport Board. She intends to utilize her network of community agencies to assist with this new role.
“My knowledge of outside agencies and my involvement with economic development will help a great deal. I’m still learning with regard to the college’s Board of Governors, but I’m familiar with board governance and that knowledge will definitely be an asset.”
“I am there to represent faculty and to ensure that their perspective is addressed.”
MacDonald, a third year Civil Engineering student at Corner Brook campus, is President of the Student Activities Council of his campus and is a member of the Council of Student Executives (CSE) for the college. He will sit on the Board of Governors to represent the student body of Newfoundland and Labrador’s public college, liaising between students and the board.
“I want to bring student issues from the 17 campuses to the board and make them aware of student views; where they come from,” says Macdonald.
“They need to know the challenges we encounter as students.”
It is his first time on the board and he sees that he can bring his own experiences to the table.
“I am in a wheelchair, so some of the issues I will deal with are wheelchair accessibility and such.”
MacDonald thinks this will be a great experience, and looks forward to serving his two-year term.
