College of the North Atlantic (CNA) proudly celebrated its exceptional alumni at last evening’s Alumni Acclaim Awards, where this year’s honorees were announced and recognized for their extraordinary achievements and lasting contributions.
Hosted by Sharon Snow of
Places to Go – NTV News, the event showcased the impact CNA alumni continue to make in their industries and communities.
“We created these awards to highlight the incredible contributions our alumni make to their professions and communities. These are not just individuals who’ve succeeded in their careers – they are leaders who’ve dedicated themselves to giving back, to shaping their communities, and to blazing new trails for others to follow,” said Elizabeth Kidd, CNA’s President and CEO. “Their journey, from the classroom to the podium, is a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and the values we hold dear as a college. They are role models, not only for us here today but for the next generation of students who will follow in their footsteps.”
Alumni were recognized in four award categories.
Young Alumni Award – Jacob Manning
"Jacob Manning has quickly become a leading digital political strategist, contributing to campaigns across multiple provinces,” explained Heidi Staeben-Simmons, Associate Vice President of Public Affairs and Advancement at CNA. “As Manager of Creative Production in the Nova Scotia Premier’s Office, Jacob’s innovative digital strategies have reached millions. His commitment to public service extends to volunteering and supporting community causes like Nevaeh’s Angel Foundation and Skills Canada.”
Manning said growing up with creative parents who encouraged him to pursue his interests has proven to be an important factor contributing to his success.
“I grew up filming and using cameras and something I always did,” he said. “My journey at CNA really set the foundation for my career now. Once you have that foundation of skills, and software, and how it all works, and what can be done, the sky’s the limit.”
Community Service Award – Andrew Hibbitts
"Andrew Hibbitts has dedicated his life to strengthening our community. From preserving heritage and supporting healthcare to his leadership in 2SLGBTQ+ advocacy with the Bay St. George Pride Committee, Andrew has been a driving force for inclusion and positive change,” Staeben-Simmons said, adding his work in economic development and volunteering with numerous organizations has made a lasting impact.
Hibbitts said he began volunteering in high school, but when he started at CNA he developed a deeper connection to giving back.
“I was only 17 when I started at CNA,” he said. “I became a member of the student council, and shortly after that I got involved with an entrepreneurial group. That’s really when I developed my appreciation for volunteer work. We need those worker bees out in our communities, we need those people doing the heavy lifting, working behind the scenes.”
Innovation Award – Tim Bonnell
“Tim Bonnell has been at the forefront of healthcare engagement innovation as Chief Technical Officer and Co-Founder of TxtSquad,” noted Staeben-Simmons, pointing out other CNA alumni play key roles at the business. “Since 2020, his leadership has driven the development of cutting-edge text messaging solutions that enhance patient outreach and accessibility. TxtSquad's commitment to supporting public health through affordable software has made a significant impact across North America.”
Bonnell said there will be more exciting news for TxtSquad in the future as the company works to make the most of technological advancements such as Artificial Intelligence (AI).
“If I could give one piece of advice for aspiring innovators and entrepreneurs to make their mark, I think one of the main things I would say is embrace continuous learning and don’t be afraid to start small,” he said. “Don’t wait until it’s perfect because you’ll never start.”
Distinguished Alumni Award – Michael Loder
“Michael Loder’s impact in healthcare technology and entrepreneurship spans over 15 years,” Staeben-Simmons said. “As Managing Director and Co-Founder of Biolantic Services, his dedication has driven innovation in the biomedical field. Michael's leadership extends to representing Canada at the G20 Young Entrepreneur Alliance and mentoring future entrepreneurs. His commitment to both his profession and his community is inspiring.”
Loder said his mother has always been an entrepreneur and encouraged him to do the same.
“We’ve made a place that our employees want to go to every day, which is pretty cool,” he said, adding his team is proud to have grown Biolantic in Newfoundland and Labrador. “A lot of cool things to come in the next few years.”
Ryan Fanning, Relationship Manager with Affinity Market Group at TD Insurance, which sponsors the Acclaim Awards, congratulated the recipients on their well-deserved awards.
“The outstanding contributions of the nominees and award recipients to their communities, both locally and across the country, is truly inspiring and will also, without a doubt, help others prosper and thrive,” Fanning said, noting TD Insurance program also helps support CNA alumni and student programs by providing bursaries, and scholarships for students across all CNA campuses.
The evening concluded with a musical performance by award-winning artist and CNA alumni Karla Jane Pilgrim.
“Our Alumni Acclaim Awards are about acknowledging the impact CNA alumni make as leaders and change makers in their communities and respective fields of influence. We are committed to building on tonight’s momentum and are looking forward to learning from this innovative, driven and exceptional group of CNA alumni” said Ted Cadigan, CNA’s Manager of Alumni & Advancement.
