December 18, 2002 – The new Board of Governors for College of the North Atlantic held its first meeting on December 2, and college President Pamela Walsh and Board Chair Moya Cahill have both expressed their pleasure with the board’s new appointees.

“The new members come from a wide range of backgrounds and all have expertise and experience that will benefit the college as we move forward in fulfilling our mandate,” says Cahill.

“We have had very good board members in the past, however the eight new members appointed by Minister Kelly were strategically chosen for their expertise and the sectors they represent,” adds Walsh.

Newly appointed to the college’s board are: Gunther Baumgartner, president and refinery manager at North Atlantic Refining; Juliet Crosbie, manager of human resources with Newfoundland Power; Joanne Hussey, project manager and researcher with the Gander Women’s Centre; David Lewis, CEO of the Central East Health Care Institutions Board; Jenny Lyall, program director for the Aboriginal Family Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay; Alan MacKinnon, office leader for Deloitte & Touche; Marilyn Tucker, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers Council; and Gary Reardon, president and managing director for Reardon Construction and Development Ltd., and Reardon Realty Services. Reardon has also served as president of the St. John’s Board of Trade.

Re-appointed to the board were: Susan Adams, chartered accountant and financial consultant; Edward Delaney, former school teacher, principal, and school board administrator; Audrey Manning, consultant; Stanley Sparkes, former educator and school administrator; Michael Tobin, former educator in both the provincial secondary and post-secondary systems; and Leonard Winsor, real estate advisor and owner/operator of DEW Enterprises Ltd. Board member Terry White, a lawyer, is currently in the middle of his term.

With the announcement of the staff and student representatives expected soon, the new board for College of the North Atlantic will number 18, an increase of four members.

“We are a very diverse institution,” says Walsh, “with more than 90 program offerings throughout our 17 provincial campuses and the Distributed Learning Service. We also have a very diverse Board of Governors with representation from several major industries and interest groups. It’s a perfect fit.”
