College of the North Atlantic will be introducing a Health Informatics program to its School of Business and Information Technology in September 2015. The one-year, post-diploma offering will only be available through the college’s distance learning service.

Health Informatics draws from the fields of health care, information technology and information management to assist in the creation, modification or implementation of computer systems in health care. This line of work requires a broad knowledge of the health system, health care processes, information systems and the needs of industry stakeholders.

“It’s a very diverse profession which incorporates aspects of health care and information technology,” said Mary Vaughan, CNA’s Dean of Business and Information Technology. “The province’s health care sector has been steadily expanding and improving its systems over the past number of years and the demand for qualified workers to lead that change is increasing.”

The Health Informatics program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to enter a variety of positions in the growing health informatics/e-health sector and also for career growth in this field. Entrance requirements will be successful completion of a recognized degree or minimum of a two-year diploma with a specialization in a health-related area or information technology.

The online post-diploma offering will enable students to continue to work in their profession while advancing their education and career options. The curriculum and online delivery will also allow for student participation and interaction through the use of online teams for various applied projects.

Health Informatics emphasizes how all of the components of health care fit together; the critical importance of quality data as well as information privacy and security.

“Health Informatics graduates will be essential in building the foundation of our province’s health care infrastructure. As processes become more automated and patient files make their way into online services; clinics, hospitals and pharmacies will need precise access to these important documents,” said Vaughan.

The addition of the Health Informatics post-diploma program increases the college’s existing online, post-diploma offerings, which also include Information Management and Journalism.
