What is it?

This program is a mentorship program for youth (ages 15-30) that will reimburse an employer 50% of the salary paid to a post-secondary graduate who they hire and mentor for full-time employment in high-demand occupations.  The maximum allowable reimbursement is $20,000 for a period of 3 to 9 months.

Which Employers Qualify?

Employers MUST:
  1. Be hiring a full-time position by October 1, 2017. 
  2. Hire any  post-secondary graduate between the ages of 15 and 30; not in receipt of EI benefits; a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or granted refugee status; and, legally entitled to work in Canada. 
  3. Mentor the graduate employee. 
  4. Sign a contract with College of the North Atlantic prescribing ALL of the terms of the program in order to receive reimbursement.
The program moves youth into the labour market by supporting companies with hiring applicants who may meet education requirements for advertised positions but may have limited experience to back it up.

Eligible Career Seekers:

  • Youth between the ages of 15 and 30 (inclusive) at the time of intake.
  • Graduate from any post-secondary institution.
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or persons who have been granted refugee status in Canada.
  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations.
  • Not in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits.

pointer What is the objective of the Career Focus program?
The program helps facilitate the transition of highly skilled young people to a rapidly evolving labour market. It will connect post-secondary graduates to wage-subsidized careers-related work opportunities in high demand occupations. It will increase the supply of highly qualified people by prompting the benefits of advanced studies.

pointer Who can receive funding under the program?
Eligible applicants include
  • private sector employers
  • organizations (not-for-profit and for-profit)
  • municipal governments
  • Aboriginal organizations (including band councils, tribal councils and self-government entities)
  • provincial and territorial governments, institutions, agencies and Crown Corporations

pointer Are there any costs involved in using the program?
No. There are no costs involved for employers using the services provided through the program. Funded in part by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy, Career Focus program, this initiative aims to provide wage subsidies to employers to reduce their costs.

pointer How long does the process take?
Staff aim to complete registration within 3-4 business days, but this process may take longer, depending on the circumstances.

pointer Is my organization limited to the number of graduates for which it can receive subsidies?
No. If your organization has multiple vacant positions, the subsidies could be used for hiring multiple graduates.

pointer I hired an employee 2 days ago. Can my organization use the program to subsidize this employee's wages?
No. All application and registration forms must be completed prior to a participant’s employment start date.

pointer How does the wage subsidy work?
Staff work together with employers to determine the funding amount to be designated for each placement. Once the placement’s registration is complete, Career Focus staff will advise your organization about how to submit the participant(s)' paystubs for reimbursement. The program can reimburse up to 50% of participants’ wages for at least 3 months.

pointer Who decides the participant's final wage?
The employer can determine the participant's wages; however, employers must agree to pay prevailing provincial or territorial minimum wage rates applicable to the position.

pointer Who can participate in the program activities being offered by the different organizations?
To participate in Career Focus, youth must be:
  • be between the ages of 15 and 30 (inclusive);
  • be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or persons who have been granted refugee status in Canada;
  • be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations; and
  • not be in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits.
