Eat The Hill 2014 an experience for students, guests alike

The Eat The Hill culinary festival in Clarenville incorporates winter activities, entertainment and food. Organized by Bonavista Institute for Cultural Tourism chef instructor Chris Sheppard, with the assistance of instructional assistant Roger Dewling of the Bonavista campus, Eat The Hill welcomed some of the province’s top chefs for three days of amazing food paired with Clarenville's best winter activities.

New for Eat The Hill 2014, the Culinary Coffee House offered a selection of locally roasted coffees, teas and espresso with desserts prepared by four of the provinces top pastry chefs. All this was paired  with the smooth sounds of Craig Young and Leeland Warham, followed by Three Shades of Grey.

On Saturday, Feb. 1 guests had the option to enjoy the slopes with a full day pass for White Hills. ?The evening began with the Iceberg Reception and was followed with a reception where seven of the province’s top chefs served a seven-course meal, each course prepared by a different chef.

On Sunday, Feb. 2 guests once again had the option to enjoy the slopes with a full day pass, and between runs they could warm up in the day lodge while working their way around six chef's stations, sampling their interpretation of Newfoundland Après Ski prepared with local ingredients.

Culinary students from the Bonavista campus got in on the action all weekend, from cleaning and serving to assisting the chef’s plate their food.

“Where else would you get the opportunity to watch and work with 12 top chefs in one weekend?” said culinary student, Michele Vincent-White.

“The students worked hard, just like in the real world, but in return they were exposed to so much,” added Sheppard. “All-in-all the weekend was a great success, which was due in part to the hard work of the culinary students and the sponsorship of College of the North Atlantic. We are looking forward to next year and Eat The Hill 2015 when a whole new class will have this opportunity.”
