College of the North Atlantic (CNA) instructor, Rajendra Jani, has been awarded the 2017 Teaching Award from the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL).
During his 23-year career as a faculty member in CNA’s School of Engineering Technology and Natural Resources, Jani has made significant contributions to the learning environment for engineering technology students; has played a leadership role in the ongoing maintenance, development and evolution of engineering technology programs; and has been an exemplary CNA ambassador for community outreach, particularly as it relates to the engagement of youth in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Jani is the first CNA instructor to receive the PEGNL teaching award.
“It is a great honour to be recognized,” Jani said. “I enjoy what I do, and am glad for the opportunity to contribute to development of young people in the field of engineering.”
Gary Tulk, Ridge Road Senior Campus Director, says Jani demonstrates a focus on the adoption of learning technologies and instructional delivery methodologies which reflects the broad range of students enrolled in CNA’s engineering technology programs.
“His dedication and commitment to students goes well beyond the requisite faculty duties, including facilitation of industry engagement by students, assistance with graduates achieving post-grad qualifications that improve employability such as Lean certification, and volunteer mentoring and guidance of both co-op students and recent graduates,” Tulk said. “He has made significant contributions to STEM related education and community outreach throughout his career and continues to serve as a great ambassador and advocate for STEM related careers.”
Beyond playing a leadership role in the development and evolution of programs designed to generate interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, Jani is also dedicated to helping graduates achieve post-graduate qualifications that improve employability.
Outside of his professional career, Jani has served on several committees and is currently on Skills Canada’s National Technical Committee for the mechatronics competition area. He is also is a reviewer for the education foundation scholarship for the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
