Chante Goodyear of Grand Falls-Windsor was the grand prize winner of a trip to New York as part of College of the North Atlantic’s recent
Alumni Reconnect contest.
Goodyear is a graduate of the college’s Comprehensive Arts and Science Transfer program and a current student at Memorial University in St. John’s. Goodyear plans to take her mother Michelle with her to the Big Apple in April 2017.
“I’m very excited,” Goodyear said. “I was really shocked at first. I wasn’t expecting it at all. It was during exam week when I got the call so it was definitely a good feeling to win.”
Goodyear heard about the contest from a former CNA instructor, who informed her it was open for entries through the college’s Facebook account.
“It popped up and I was like ‘I’ll sign up and put my name in’. I never thought anything of it after I entered because I never win anything like that. When I actually got the call, I was shocked, I didn’t even know what to say. I got the call and I was like ‘oh my gosh. I actually got it!’ I wasn’t expecting it.”
Even her roommates didn’t believe it at first.
“I was in my house in St. John’s. My roommates were just looking at me because I was like ‘Oh my God, I won a trip to New York!’ They didn’t believe me at first until I put them (CNA’s Alumni and Advancement Office) on speaker phone. They were so excited for me.”
While she has a few months to prepare, Goodyear plans to take the trip in the spring once she’s finished the semester at MUN because it’ll be a good break after a hectic schedule.
“I was in New York a few years ago and it was awesome so when I got the call I was even more excited because I love it there. You fly into New Jersey, so we’re planning to stay a night there, and then we’ll stay in Times Square,” Goodyear said.
“I actually have a friend who lives in Jersey who is from Grand Falls-Windsor and we’re hoping to meet up with her as well. I’m looking forward to doing more of the tourist things we didn’t get to do when we were there a few years ago. We haven’t figured out all the details yet but we will.”
Anna Peddle, CNA’s Manager of Alumni and Advancement, says this is the first time the college has given away this type of prize, and they achieved their contest goal.
“At College of the North Atlantic we continuously strive to stay in touch with our alumni and find ways for them to reconnect with us,” Peddle said. “Our latest efforts to include a wonderful trip did just that, and we are excited that thousands more of our alumni have signed on as official members of our organization. Congratulations to our lucky winner Chante, we wish her an amazing trip to New York.”
